Generator Installation in Maryland
Serving Howard County, Baltimore County, Baltimore City, Harford County, Anne Arundel County, Montgomery County, Frederick County, Prince George’s County, and Charles County with backup power solutions—from portable generator connections to whole-home standby systems.
Storms, outages, and aging grids make backup power a planning decision—not a scramble in the dark. Whether you need a portable generator inlet and interlock, a manual or automatic transfer switch, or a whole-home standby generator, the right setup depends on what you want to keep running, your panel and service capacity, fuel type, and local permit rules.
Wadi Electric LLC designs and installs generator readiness and backup power across Maryland—with honest load planning, permitting through the local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) for your job address when required, and coordination with other trades (gas, concrete pad, propane) when the project needs them.
We’re an electrical service, construction, and power-solutions company—not just an electrician.” Owner Sohiab Wadis team builds backup systems that fit how you live and what your electrical service can safely support.

Backup options in plain English
Not every home needs a full standby generator on day one. These are the main paths we install and explain so you can choose with eyes open.
Portable generator + inlet + interlock
A portable generator sits outside and plugs into a generator inlet (a weatherproof receptacle wired to your panel). An interlock kit (or equivalent listed transfer equipment) is a mechanical or electrical safeguard that helps prevent your generator from feeding the utility and the utility from backfeeding your generator—critical for safety and for utility workers.
Best fit when: You want a lower-cost entry into backup power, you’re willing to start the generator yourself, and you’re okay powering selected circuits (or a carefully planned set of loads)—not necessarily the whole house on day one.
Typical electrical scope: Inlet install, interlock (or approved transfer method), wiring, labeling, and permit/inspection when required. Generator unit purchase, fuel, and maintenance are separate unless we package equipment for you.
Transfer switch (manual or automatic)
A transfer switch is the brain that moves selected loads (or the whole service, depending on design) between utility power and generator power.
• Manual transfer: You start the generator and flip the switch when the utility fails.
• Automatic transfer (ATS): The system senses an outage, starts a compatible standby generator, and transfers power without you standing in the driveway at 2 a.m.
Best fit when: You want cleaner, code-minded switching than informal cords, and you’re building toward either a portable setup done right or a full standby system.
Whole-home standby generator
A whole-home (standby) generator is permanently installed, usually on a pad outdoors, fueled by natural gas or propane (site-dependent), and paired with an automatic transfer switch. When utility power fails, it starts and restores power to the circuits (or whole service) designed into the system—often including HVAC, refrigeration, well/sump, lighting, and critical receptacles, depending on sizing.
Best fit when: You want hands-off backup for storms and outages, you’re ready for a larger turnkey project, and your panel / service capacity, gas line, and site layout can support the equipment.
Straight talk: Standby projects often involve more than the electrical work alone—gas line sizing, propane tank placement, pad/concrete, clearances, noise ordinances, and utility/AHJ rules. We’ll tell you what’s electrical vs. what needs a gas or concrete partner so the quote isnt a surprise.
Interlock vs transfer switch — which do you need?
Homeowners (and search results) mix these terms. Here’s the honest distinction we use on estimates:
Interlock kit — Locks utility main and generator breaker so both can’t be on at once (listed kit for your panel type) — Portable generator + inlet
Manual transfer switch — Separate switchgear that selects utility vs generator for designated circuits or the service — Portable or smaller standby
Automatic transfer switch (ATS) — Detects outage and transfers automatically — Whole-home standby generator
We’ll recommend the listed method that matches your panel brand, local code, and the loads you care about—never a DIY backfeed that risks your family or the line crew.
What we look at before recommending a path
A good backup plan starts with facts, not a catalog photo:
What must stay on — fridge, sump/well, furnace/heat pump, medical devices, home office, EV charger (often load-managed), whole house vs selected circuits
Panel brand, amp rating, and spare space — many standby and transfer jobs start with a panel upgrade or service heavy-up when the existing gear can’t support the transfer equipment or generator breaker. See https://www.wadielectric.com/panel-upgrade/.
Service size and utility — coordination with BGE, Pepco, or other local utilities when service work is in scope
Fuel — natural gas availability and meter capacity, or propane tank placement and clearance
Site — pad location, clearances from windows/doors, drainage, HOA or noise rules
Permits — electrical (and sometimes mechanical/gas) through your local AHJ
Photos of the panel (door open), meter / service, and proposed outdoor pad area speed up FaceTime / WhatsApp estimates.
Our process
Step 1 — Listen & scope — Call, text, email photos, FaceTime / WhatsApp, or onsite. We clarify portable vs standby goals and must-run loads.
Step 2 — Load & equipment path — Honest recommendation: inlet/interlock, transfer switch, or standby—and whether panel/service work should come first.
Step 3 — Written plan — Clear scope for electrical work; call-outs for gas, pad, or equipment supply when theyre separate.
Step 4 — Permits & scheduling — We pull or coordinate electrical permits when your AHJ requires them.
Step 5 — Install & label — Inlet, interlock or transfer equipment, standby connection as scoped; clean labeling so you (and inspectors) know what’s what.
Step 6 — Inspection & walkthrough — Pass inspection when required; show you how to operate the system safely.

Related upgrades that often pair with generators
Backup power sits on top of a healthy electrical backbone. When it makes sense (never as pressure), we also discuss:
• Panel upgrade / service heavy-up — https://www.wadielectric.com/panel-upgrade/ — common prerequisite for standby breakers, transfer gear, and modern capacity
• EV charger installation — https://www.wadielectric.com/ev-charger-installation/ — load planning so charging and backup don’t fight each other
• Surge protection — protect electronics when power returns after an outage
• Whole-home electrical packages — generator readiness bundled with other modernization work
How we price generator work
Every generator job is site-specific. Scope depends on portable vs standby, panel and service capacity, transfer method, run length, fuel/pad needs, and your local AHJ. We don’t publish dollar ranges here—your written estimate for this house is what counts.
Send panel / meter / outdoor area photos, or book a FaceTime / WhatsApp / onsite estimate—we’ll price your setup, not a generic internet number.

FAQs
Can I just plug a portable generator into a dryer outlet?
We don’t recommend informal backfeeding. It can energize utility lines, create shock and fire risk, and violate code. A proper inlet + listed interlock or transfer switch is the safe path.
Do I need an automatic transfer switch for a portable generator?
Not always. Many portable setups use a listed interlock with the right inlet and breaker arrangement. Automatic transfer usually pairs with a standby generator designed for that duty.
Will a standby generator power my whole house including the EV charger?
Sometimes—if the generator is sized for it and loads are managed. EV charging is a large continuous load; we often prioritize critical circuits or use load management so the generator isn’t overloaded.
Do you handle gas lines and concrete pads?
Electrical scope is our core. Gas line sizing, propane, and pads often involve licensed partners or separate trades. Well say clearly what’s in our quote vs. what you (or we) need to coordinate.
Do you pull permits?
Where required by your local AHJ, yes—we coordinate electrical permits and inspections. Gas/mechanical permits may be separate depending on the work.
