Level 2 vs. NEMA 14-50 vs. Tesla Wall Connector

Not every “EV install” is the same. We’ll match the hardware to your vehicle, parking spot, and electrical capacity.

Level 2 (hardwired or receptacle)

The everyday home standard. Faster overnight charging than a standard 120V outlet. We install universal Level 2 units and dedicated circuits sized for the job—commonly in the 40A / 50A / 60A range depending on the charger and your panel.

NEMA 14-50

A heavy-duty 240V receptacle many EVs and portable chargers use. Popular when you want flexibility or you’re between vehicles. Still requires a properly sized dedicated circuit, correct wire, breaker, and placement.

Tesla Wall Connector

Tesla’s wall-mounted home unit. We install Tesla Wall Connectors with the same load calculation, mounting, and permit/inspection path as other Level 2 gear—indoors or outdoors as your site allows.

Indoor, outdoor, attached or detached garage

Maryland homes vary: attached two-car garages, basement panels with long runs upstairs, detached garages on separate feeders, and outdoor wall mounts near the driveway. Distance from panel to charger, wall type, and weather exposure all affect wire size, conduit, and mounting—photos help us scope that early.

Panel capacity honesty (and optional surge protection)

A charger is only as safe as the panel behind it. Before we pull wire, we evaluate available capacity—not just “is there an empty breaker slot.”

What we look at:

• Main service size and existing major loads (HVAC, range, dryer, hot tub, etc.)

• Space in the panel for a dedicated breaker

• Wire path length and any subpanel or detached-garage feeders

• Whether a panel upgrade (heavy-up) or other redistribution is the safer path

Straight talk: Many homes can take a Level 2 circuit on the existing service. Some cannot—especially older 100A services, busy panels, or homes already near continuous load limits. If a heavy-up or related work is needed, we’ll explain why before anything starts. No surprises, no pressure.

Surge protection (optional conversation): Adding a high-draw circuit is a good moment to talk whole-home surge protection and overall panel health. We’ll recommend what’s appropriate for your setup—not a one-size pitch.

Permits & inspection (process-level)

Proper EV charger work typically goes through permitting and inspection with the local AHJ for the job address—the county or city that covers where the charger will be installed. We plan for that from day one.

How we handle it (not a fee table):

• For many homes with a garage or driveway, where wiring stays on your property, the local AHJ typically requires a residential electrical permit. Your licensed electrician pulls that permit with the authority that covers your job address (county or city process, depending on location).

• HOA, condo, or common-ownership setups can add planning or association steps before the electrical permit moves forward—authorization letters, location sketches, and exterior-alteration rules are common. Association rules still matter even when “right to charge” considerations apply.

• After install, an inspection confirms the work meets code before you rely on it daily.

We don’t invent local fees or timelines here—those depend on property type, scope, and AHJ workload. We’ll tell you what’s required for your address once we see the site details.

Photo checklist for estimates

A clear photo set often gets you a solid path to an estimate without a wasted trip.

1) Electrical panel — door open, breakers visible (and the panel label / main size if readable)

2) Where the charger will go — wall, post, or outdoor location

3) Path between panel and charger — any long runs, unfinished basement ceilings, exterior walls

4) Garage / parking layout — attached, detached, or driveway-only

5) Charger you already own (box / nameplate) — or note if you want us to supply Tesla / Level 2 / NEMA 14-50

2) Site check — Confirm mounting location, wire path, indoor/outdoor needs, and any HOA notes.

3) Load calculation — Verify the panel can support the circuit; flag heavy-up needs early.

4) Permit — We pull electrical permitting with the local AHJ for the job address, for the scope we contract.

5) Install — Dedicated circuit (40A / 50A / 60A as designed), charger or NEMA 14-50, neat conduit/wiring, labeled breakers.

6) Inspection — Local inspection as required; you get a code-compliant home charging setup.

Do I need a permit for an EV charger in Maryland?

In most cases, yes—an electrical permit and inspection are part of a proper install. Requirements follow the local AHJ for your job address (county or city). Garage/driveway jobs often follow a standard residential electrical permit path; HOA/condo sites may need extra association or planning steps first.

Can you install a Tesla Wall Connector?

Yes. We install Tesla Wall Connectors along with universal Level 2 chargers and NEMA 14-50 circuits.

What if my panel is full or too small?

We’ll say so up front after a load evaluation. Some homes need a panel upgrade or other changes before a Level 2 circuit is appropriate. We’ll outline options before work begins.

Indoor vs. outdoor—does it matter?

Yes. Outdoor and detached-garage installs need weather-rated equipment, proper mounting, and protected wiring. Photos of the location help us plan that correctly.

Can I just use an extension cord from the house?

That’s not a safe or code-compliant long-term setup—especially across sidewalks, yards, or unprotected outdoor runs. A dedicated circuit and permitted install is the right approach.
